Dr. ir. Ferrie W.J. van Hattum studied Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Design in Plastics,  at the University of Twente where he graduated in 1995 in the field of thermoplastic composites. He continued his PhD research on thermoplastic composites at the University of Minho, Portugal. After completing his PhD, van Hattum started working in 1999 as a researcher at the Centre for Lightweight Structures, a collaboration between TNO and Delft University of Technology, that later continued independently as Lightweight Structures BV. There, in cooperation with industry partners, he led research projects on composite applications.

From 2001 onward, van Hattum worked in Portugal, where he was involved in numerous projects and studies in the field of composite materials in various roles, including university lecturer and researcher at the Institute for Polymers and Composites at the University of Minho, head of the Composites Group at PIEP-Innovation in Polymer Engineering (a non-profit industrial research center), associate professor at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Minho responsible for the Product Design program he helped setting up, and general director of the Design Institute of Guimarães (an institute founded by the municipality of Guimarães, the University of Minho, and industry to promote innovation in design).

Since September 2013, van Hattum has been working as a professor at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, setting up and leading TPAC (the ThermoPlastic composite Application Center). He also serves on the boards of SAMPE Benelux (Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering) and CompositesNL (the industry association for the Dutch composites sector).
