SMART PRODUCTION

Summary

The research group Lightweight Structures at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences is partner in the 3 year Interreg Deutschland-Nederland project ‘Smart Production’. The project is funded by the ERDF (European Regional Development Fund), the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the State North Rhine-Westphalia (MWEIMH NRW), the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the provinces Gelderland and Overijssel. The main aim of this project is to develop novel processes, machines and materials for low volume productions. Costs for the design and making of tools and dies represent a substantial share of the production costs and thus determine the retail price. Moreover the increasing demand for individual solutions as well as increasingly shorter innovation cycles caused a trend to flexible manufacturing processes to make low volume productions more variable and reduce the related costs. The Lightweight Structures group participates in the development of fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts, which are vacuum formed using a 3D flexible mold.
